CASHLESS PAYMENTGreece Introduces Mandatory POS Machines in Farmer’s Markets

Athens, Greece – The Panhellenic Federation of Professional Sellers of Farmer’s Markets has announced the imminent deployment of Point of Sale (POS) machines for credit and debit card transactions in farmer’s markets, commencing this Tuesday. This strategic move emphasizes the universal adoption of POS machines, aimed at enhancing service efficiency for both consumers and vendors.

Starting Monday, vendors participating in farmer’s markets, fairs, and Sunday markets are mandated to facilitate card payments and instant payment services, ensuring a more streamlined transaction experience.

To support a smooth transition, a ministerial decision outlines penalties for non-compliance. Notably, a grace period from February 1 to March 1, 2024, exempts new obligees from fines, provided they have acquired card acceptance terminals by January 31, 2024, and are in the process of installation. This exemption is an effort to assist businesses in adhering to the new regulations during the transition phase.
