Athens, Greece – Greek soccer authorities are seeking a meeting with Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou and Deputy Sports Minister Yiannis Vroutsis to discuss the renewal of the contract for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The existing contract is set to expire in September.
The request for the meeting was formally submitted following the approval of the relevant proposal by the executive committee of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) on Monday. The Professional Football Committee is pushing for the renewal of the VAR contract, emphasizing its significance in ensuring fair officiating during soccer matches.
In addition to the contract renewal, authorities are looking to enhance the existing VAR system by incorporating semi-automatic offside technology and goal line technology. These upgrades aim to provide more accurate and instantaneous decisions, particularly in determining whether the ball has crossed the goal line.
