Athens International Airport has had a bumper summer, with passenger traffic for August 2024 taking off—literally—by a whopping 10.5% compared to the same time last year. It seems everyone wants a piece of the Greek sun!
According to figures released by AIA, a total of 3.64 million passengers passed through the airport in August alone. Domestic travelers were up by 6.8%, while international jet-setters soared by a sky-high 12.1%.
But the August numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. Across the first eight months of 2024, the airport has handled an eye-watering 21.26 million passengers. That’s a 13.9% rise from last year, with international traffic leading the charge, increasing by 16.6%.
A spokesperson for AIA said, “Athens is clearly the place to be—and leave from.” With the numbers climbing, the future of Greek tourism is looking brighter than a Santorini sunset.
So, whether you’re a local hopping to the islands or a tourist taking in the Acropolis, it’s safe to say Athens Airport is having its moment in the sun. Safe travels, but don’t forget to pack some patience—the check-in queues might be longer than usual!
