Nick Kyrgios is set to make a comeback at Wimbledon, according to his doubles partner and close friend, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kokkinakis provided positive updates on Kyrgios’ recovery from his injury troubles and expressed their mutual desire to reunite as the ‘Special Ks’ doubles team for the prestigious tournament.
Kokkinakis, who has been friends with Kyrgios since their childhood, shared encouraging insights with AAP regarding Kyrgios’ plans. The Australian tennis maverick has been absent from tour matches since the Japan Open seven months ago, undergoing knee surgery after missing the Australian Open in January. Despite initially planning to play at the French Open, Kyrgios decided to skip the event. Kokkinakis assured that Kyrgios’ recovery has been slightly slower than expected, but he is now on the mend and feeling optimistic about the upcoming grass-court season.
The duo has been discussing their partnership and expressed their intention to compete together at Wimbledon, health permitting. They previously claimed the Australian Open doubles title, showcasing their chemistry on the court. While doubles hasn’t been a top priority for Kokkinakis this year, he still aims to participate in major tournaments, especially alongside Kyrgios, as their time together is a fun and enjoyable experience.
Currently playing with Jan-Lennard Struff in Paris, Kokkinakis stated that he would have partnered with Kyrgios at Wimbledon if Kyrgios had not been ready. Their partnership goes beyond mere results, rooted in a deep friendship that forms the foundation of their doubles collaboration.
