Following the resounding victory of his New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to receive the official mandate to form a government from Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Monday morning. Mitsotakis is scheduled to visit the Presidential Palace in central Athens at 11 a.m., and he will be sworn in for his second term as prime minister at 1 p.m.
First thing on Monday morning, President Sakellaropoulou will be briefed on the official election results by parliamentary speaker Konstantinos Tassoulas, who will receive them from the caretaker government’s interior minister, Kalliopi Spanou. Mitsotakis is expected to announce the composition of his new cabinet later on Monday.
This formal process marks the progression of the election outcome into a concrete government formation, allowing Mitsotakis to begin his second term with a clear mandate. The Greek President’s role in the process is to validate the election results and entrust the winning party’s leader with the responsibility of establishing a new government.
