Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Athens, embarking on a significant official one-day visit that includes a crucial meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
In a Greek-language message posted on the X platform, Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Indian community in Greece, stating, “Amidst Greece’s historic landscapes, the warmth and hospitality of the Indian community shine intensely. I offer my heartfelt gratitude for the gracious welcome.”

Modi’s presence in Athens holds particular importance within the context of Greek foreign policy, as it marks the first official visit by an Indian prime minister to Greece in four decades. Notably, the last such visit occurred in 1983 when then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited Greece upon the invitation of her Greek counterpart, Andreas Papandreou.
The meeting on Friday is deemed a significant starting point for broader diplomatic engagements. Another pivotal discussion is set to unfold between Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and his Indian counterpart between September 18-21 in New York, taking place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
