Firefighters are currently battling a total of 111 wildfires that have erupted across Greece, with an alarming surge of 59 new blazes reported within the past 24 hours.
The majority of these newly ignited fires have manifested as flare-ups in critical areas such as Parnitha and Evros, as well as in various other fire fronts, as detailed by the fire service.
Specifically, in the Parnitha region, a robust and dedicated firefighting force is actively contending with the resurgence of fires, predominantly concentrated in the southwestern sector near the Fyli fortress.
In the Evros region, the situation is equally dire, with the occurrence of numerous flare-ups in localities like Dadia, Aisymi, and Soufli. These flare-ups have amalgamated to form a new front in the Leptokaria area, necessitating the issuance of evacuation directives for the residents in the affected vicinity.
Meanwhile, a significant development unfolded in Psachna, Evia, where law enforcement authorities have apprehended an 18-year-old individual under suspicion of committing two counts of arson. The accused, who is diagnosed with an intellectual disability, allegedly ignited tires beneath an electricity pylon.
In another instance on Evia, law enforcement officials in Karystos are interrogating a 48-year-old individual suspected of causing four fires in the region approximately one month ago.
On the island of Kefalonia, a 42-year-old volunteer firefighter has confessed to engaging in six counts of arson within forested areas. Consequently, the individual has been placed under house arrest pending further investigation.
Further complicating matters, in Avlonas, Attica, a 45-year-old man has been charged with arson and has appeared before a prosecutor. The accused, whose lawyer attests to serious psychiatric challenges and a discontinuation of treatment two weeks ago, refutes the allegations levied against him.
