STORM WARNING!Greece Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Storms as National Meteorological Service Issues Warning

Athens, Greece – Greece is gearing up for a spell of adverse weather conditions as the National Meteorological Service has issued an emergency weather forecast. Western, central, and northern regions of the country are expected to be impacted by heavy rainfall and storms starting from Monday.

The inclement weather will first make its presence felt in the western parts of Thessaly, Epirus, western Macedonia, and potentially the Ionian Islands. It is anticipated that the weather system will gradually expand its reach, affecting additional areas on Tuesday and eventually encompassing the entire country by Wednesday.

The weather outlook for Monday includes wet conditions in western, central, and northern Greece, with sporadic strong and localized storms primarily in Epirus, western Macedonia, Thessaly, and possibly the Ionian Islands. Specific areas set to experience adverse weather conditions include the western parts of Thessaly (Trikala and Karditsa regional units), as well as the western and northern regions of the Larissa regional unit.

As the week progresses, Tuesday is expected to bring overcast skies along with pockets of rain and robust storms to the Ionian and mainland regions, excluding eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Notably, Thessaly will see the heaviest rainfall in the northern and eastern portions of the Magnesia regional unit, Karditsa, Trikala, and the southern areas of the Larissa regional unit.

On Wednesday, Greece will encounter rain across nearly the entire nation, accompanied by locally potent storms in the Ionian Sea, various mainland areas, Evia, and the northern Aegean. Within Thessaly, the most substantial rainfall is anticipated in Karditsa, Larissa, and Trikala, as well as the eastern sectors of the Magnesia regional unit. Furthermore, strong storms are forecasted for the Sporades.

In preparation for the approaching weather front, an interministerial meeting convened at the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry on Friday. Another meeting is scheduled over the weekend to ensure appropriate measures are taken as the adverse weather conditions draw near.
