The festivities commenced with a grand welcome party at Ogwumike’s family abode on Nov. 15, followed by a traditional Nigerian ceremony the next day at the Igbo Catholic Community Center in Houston, Texas. More than 900 guests graced the occasion, celebrating the union of Ogwumike, a first-generation Nigerian-American, and Akpejiori, hailing from Lagos, Nigeria.

“It was a royal celebration of Nigerian culture, family, and community,” shares Ogwumike, emphasizing the significance of the ceremony that unfolded in three stages, adhering to Igbo customs. Ogwumike’s elegance was showcased in a custom gown created by Nigerian designer Nneka Alexander of Brides by Nona, perfectly complementing her cultural attire, a stunning yellow dress with a 10-foot detachable train.

The reception, held at the Sans Souci Ballroom in Tomball, Texas, was a star-studded affair graced by notable personalities such as Lisa Leslie, Sheila Jackson Lee, Emmanuel Acho, and Tamar Braxton. A sumptuous buffet featuring a fusion of southern flavors and Nigerian delicacies added culinary delights to the evening.

Amid their busy schedules, the couple plans to forego a traditional honeymoon, and instead opting for a series of “mini-moons” in 2024, starting with extended weekend getaways to destinations like Bora Bora and Aruba.
