Demi Lovato has shared the reasons behind her decision to resume using she/her pronouns alongside they/them pronouns. In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, the singer-songwriter stressed that: “I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting.”
“I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word,” she added.
Lovato, 30, also expressed a desire for more gender-neutral spaces for artists and individuals, citing instances like using public restrooms or filling out forms with limited gender options as challenging experiences.
“I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it,” she says.
“Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”
“I see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there are no more,” added the Grammy nominee. “I think this has to change. Hopefully with time there will be more options.”
Lovato’s journey of self-discovery and healing led her to come out as nonbinary in 2021, officially adopting they/them pronouns at that time.
Later, Lovato reintroduced she/her pronouns to her Instagram profile, explaining in a podcast conversation that her gender expression felt balanced between masculine and feminine energies. She clarified that the choice to use she/her pronouns again reflected a personal sense of femininity, highlighting the fluidity of her identity. Lovato emphasized that while pronouns may evolve, respect and understanding are crucial in navigating these changes and acknowledging that mistakes can happen.
