Jameela Jamil recently revealed that she decided to pull out of her audition for the fourth season of the hit Netflix series “You” because she did not want to film a sex scene.
The actress, known for her role in “The Good Place,” shared this information during an episode of the Podcrushed podcast by Stitcher Studios.
Jamil explained that her character in the show was supposed to be sexy, but her discomfort with anything sexual led her to withdraw from the audition. She expressed surprise when she learned that the show’s lead actor, Penn Badgley, had also decided to no longer participate in intimate scenes. Jamil confessed that she couldn’t even watch sex scenes in films and had to fast forward through them, as she had become extremely shy about watching such scenes involving other people.
The actress clarified that her decision to avoid objectifying herself stemmed from childhood sexual trauma. She mentioned occasionally wearing revealing clothing but emphasized her protective attitude towards herself in that regard.
During the podcast, Jamil, Badgley, and the hosts discussed the response to Badgley’s request to limit his intimate scenes, highlighting the double standard that exists between men and women in society. Badgley had faced public backlash over his comments, but he later clarified that his intention was to address the culture of exploitation and abuse in Hollywood rather than criticize the show itself.
Badgley stated that despite having performed sex scenes in the past, he had always felt disturbed by them. He expressed his strong aversion to blurring boundaries in that aspect of the job, as he found the exploitative history of Hollywood deeply troubling.
The conversation between Jamil, Badgley, and the podcast hosts shed light on the challenges faced by actors in navigating intimate scenes and the need to address the industry’s exploitative past. By sharing their perspectives, they highlighted the importance of setting personal boundaries and promoting a healthier and more respectful environment in the entertainment industry.
