The 17th Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF), known for showcasing Greek-American artists and industry professionals, will take place from June 3 to 11, 2023. The festival’s lineup was announced recently and includes screenings of feature-length films, documentaries, and short films, along with workshops, events, awards, and a masterclass. The Orpheus Awards, recognizing the best feature, documentary, short, and animation films, as well as direction and performance, will be presented on June 11 at the Pacific Design Center. Audience Choice Orpheus Awards will also be announced in each category. Virtual screenings will be available for on-demand streaming on the festival’s website from June 12 to 18.

At the opening night ceremony on June 3, novelist, screenwriter, and producer George Pelecanos will receive the 2023 Honorary Orpheus Award. Pelecanos, known for his work on HBO series such as The Wire and The Deuce, will also host a masterclass for aspiring filmmakers and students the following day in collaboration with the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture.

LAGFF has a history of honoring Greek-American contributors to the film industry, including Jim Gianopulos, Alexander Payne, and Gena Rowlands. The festival serves as a platform to bring Greek, Cypriot, and international films to the United States and is supported by the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles. LAGFF, located in Los Angeles, offers access to studios, production companies, and industry experts, and has showcased over 600 Greek films since its establishment in 2007, engaging numerous filmmakers each year.

Additionally, the festival has launched the Global Greek Film Initiative (GGFI), aimed at promoting cultural exchange between Greece, the US, and the Hellenic Diaspora, fostering employment opportunities and economic growth in Greece, and becoming a central hub for Greek film programs and initiatives worldwide.
