IT WASN'T ITShaggy Says ‘It Wasn’t Me’ is ‘An Anti-Cheating Song’ That Fans Have Misunderstood for Decades

Jamaican-born rapper and singer Shaggy is currently teaming up with Smirnoff ICE for the brand’s Relaunch Tour ahead of his own Hot Summer Nights Tour. The Relaunch Tour, featuring artists like T-Pain and DaniLeigh, began in May and will continue throughout the summer. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Shaggy, known for his iconic song “Angel,” expressed his excitement about partnering with Smirnoff ICE, a brand that has been a part of his partying era. He praised the brand’s cool factor and the innovative approach they are taking with the relaunch.

“It was just one of those lineups that was legendary — kind of old-meets-new type vibe. Smirnoff Ice has always been a part of my partying era,” he says.

In the interview, Shaggy discussed his upcoming tour, the enduring impact of his hit songs, and the misconception surrounding his popular track “It Wasn’t Me.” Despite being in a loving relationship with his wife of almost 10 years, Rebecca Packer, and being a father to five children, including three daughters with Packer and two sons from a previous relationship, Shaggy revealed that some people still assume he is a player because of the lyrics in “It Wasn’t Me.” He addressed the misunderstanding and highlighted how fans often misinterpret the true meaning behind the song.

“It was a big misconception with that song because that song is not a cheating song. It’s an anti-cheating song. It’s just that nobody listened to the record to the end. There’s a part in the record where it’s a conversation between two people and you have one guy, which is me at that point, giving that bad advice, like, “Yo, bro, how could you get caught? Just tell her, ‘It wasn’t me,’” and then at the end, the guy says, “I’m going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. I’ve been listening to your reasoning, it makes no sense at all. Going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. You might think that you’re a player, but you’re completely lost,” he explained.

“Nobody hears that part! That’s what the song says. But everybody’s just caught up on that, “It wasn’t me, it wasn’t me.” It’s an anti-cheating song. No one ever really buys into that, and I keep explaining it to people. Then, they go listen to it back and be like, “Oh dude, I totally missed that,” Shaggy added

As he gears up for his Hot Summer Nights Tour and continues to collaborate with Smirnoff ICE, he remains focused on entertaining audiences and celebrating the success of his musical career spanning over three decades.
