Netflix has confirmed that the highly popular series “Squid Game” will be returning this year with a major plot twist.
The release date for the spin-off series, titled “Squid Game: The Challenge,” has been announced to be in November, according to Netflix’s Upfronts event. However, the specific release date is yet to be revealed.
In the reality spin-off, 456 contestants will compete in games inspired by the original South Korean drama series, vying for a prize of $4.56 million. “Squid Game” is a gripping survival thriller set in modern-day Seoul, where desperate individuals are enticed into participating in seemingly innocent children’s games with the chance to win money or face deadly consequences.
Earlier this year, it was brought to light that some performers on “Squid Game: The Challenge” experienced harsh working conditions during filming. Following reports of contestants suffering from extreme cold and requiring medical treatment, the Health and Safety Executive launched an investigation into the matter. The contestants endured freezing temperatures of -3°C and had to maintain absolute stillness to succeed in one of the games. Allegations have since emerged that participants were subjected to unfavorable conditions, leading to potential legal action against Netflix by multiple individuals who claim they were treated poorly during filming.
In response to the claims, Studio Lambert, The Garden, and Netflix released a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to the health and safety of the cast and crew. They asserted that proper safety procedures were implemented and while the set was cold, participants were aware of the conditions, refuting any allegations of serious injuries.
As fans eagerly anticipate the return of “Squid Game” with its intriguing spin-off series, the controversy surrounding the working conditions during filming raises important questions about the treatment of participants and the responsibility of production companies to prioritize their well-being.
