CLIMATE'S GONE WILDEurope’s Deadliest Fire Ravages Greece for the 10th Day

Greece is grappling with a catastrophic wildfire that has become the deadliest in Europe this summer, claiming at least 20 lives in the span of 10 days. Fanned by intense heatwaves sweeping across the continent, the inferno has razed vast stretches of land, presenting an unprecedented challenge to the nation’s firefighting forces.

The origins of the fire can be traced back to its initial outbreak near the city of Alexandroupolis, which has since escalated into an uncontrollable conflagration engulfing the Evros region in northeastern Greece. The peril has been exacerbated by near-gale force winds and scorching temperatures, fueling the fire’s ferocity.

The grim reality is that all but one of the individuals who have tragically lost their lives were irregular migrants seeking refuge in the forested terrain. “It is the definition of what we call a megafire,” expressed government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, emphasizing the unprecedented scale of this disaster.

A comprehensive report from the European Union-supported Copernicus Climate Change Service reveals that the blaze has consumed over 77,000 hectares of land, earning its place as one of the most substantial fires witnessed on European soil in recent years. The magnitude of the challenge is palpable, as efforts to contain the flames prove to be an uphill struggle.

The tales of loss and devastation are heartrending. Michalis Tsolakis, a 40-year-old beekeeper from Kirki, in the Evros region, recounts his futile attempt to safeguard his beehives: “We tried to wet the land with hoses a bit, for protection, but the water was evaporating in no time. It just wasn’t possible to save anything.”

With the enormity of the crisis becoming increasingly apparent, the country’s climate crisis and civil protection minister, alongside senior government officials, visited the afflicted region to assess the extent of the damage. As Greece grapples with this crisis, lawmakers are set to deliberate the consequences of the devastating fires and evaluate the nation’s preparedness in a parliamentary session.

International solidarity has come to the fore as firefighting forces from Cyprus, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, and Slovakia rally to Greece’s aid, lending their expertise in the battle against the ferocious blazes.

Amid this chaos, a separate wildfire that had ignited on the outskirts of Athens earlier in the week has abated, according to the fire brigade’s assessment. The situation remains dire, as scores of people have been forced to abandon their homes across Greece in the face of hundreds of wildfires that have ignited across the country, marking the second major fire outbreak of the summer.

The sobering aftermath of a July wildfire that engulfed the island of Rhodes, compelling the evacuation of around 20,000 foreign tourists and causing extensive damage to resorts and hotels, serves as a haunting reminder of the destructive potential these fires wield.
