EVER BLAZINGFirefighters Battle Resurgent Blazes Along Evros and Rodopi Fronts

Efforts to quell renewed fires on the fronts of Evros and Rodopi, situated close to the Turkish border, are in full swing as firefighters labor to gain control over the resurging blazes.

The Fire Department has augmented its firefighting capabilities with an infusion of 180 additional firefighters, bolstering the operational personnel count to a formidable 474. Organized into 16 cohesive ground teams, these firefighters are further reinforced by a fleet of 100 vehicles, and their endeavors are amplified by the strategic deployment of four aircraft and two helicopters.

In the Evros region, a concentrated firefighting offensive is centered on the front situated northwest of the Kotronia area. Simultaneously, in the Rodopi region, teams are strategically positioned to tackle the fire front that stretches between the Kassitera and Kirkis areas.

During the overnight hours, firefighting squads executed an extensive operation on the front northwest of the Kotronia area. This operation focused on establishing a robust defensive line, designed to impede the fire’s encroachment into the heart of the Dadia forest. In words shared with the state broadcaster ERT, Yiannis Artopios, spokesperson for the Fire Brigade, underlined the significance of this effort: “We are protecting the core of Dadia.”

Artopios emphasized that progress has been achieved on multiple other fronts as well. He highlighted that the situations in the central Viotia region and Attica have been effectively contained and are nearing resolution. While isolated flare-ups persist, the overall improvement across these fire fronts is encouraging.
