Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks has become uncertain as he has indicated his hesitancy to sign a new contract with the team. Despite being eligible for a three-year extension worth around $173 million in a few weeks, the NBA star has chosen not to commit to it at this time. Antetokounmpo’s decision raises questions about the possibility of his departure from the Bucks, a team he has been an integral part of for years.
In an interview with The New York Times, Antetokounmpo explained his rationale for delaying contract negotiations: “The real question’s not going to be this year—numbers-wise it doesn’t make sense. But next year, next summer it would make more sense for both parties. Even then, I don’t know.”
While the Greek Freak‘s statement doesn’t guarantee his exit from the Bucks, it underscores his desire to prioritize championship contention. He expressed his commitment to being the best version of himself and highlighted the importance of shared goals within the team: “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”
Despite his considerations about the contract, Antetokounmpo remains deeply attached to the Milwaukee Bucks and the city itself: “I bleed green. I know this. This is my team, and it’s going to forever be my team.” He acknowledged the support he has received and his dedication to the city during his tenure.
Beyond basketball, Antetokounmpo has been actively engaged in business investments alongside his brothers, focusing on ventures that extend beyond the court. He noted his significant growth in this aspect, particularly from 2020 to 2023, stating, “I think I’ve taken a 10X jump off the court.”
In a recent move, Antetokounmpo launched the Calamos Antetokounmpo Sustainable Equity Fund at the New York Stock Exchange, showcasing his interest in environmental, social, and governance investments. He has also revealed his inability to participate in the FIBA World Cup due to fitness issue, with his focus now on preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Antetokounmpo’s stance on his contract and his expanded focus on business endeavors suggest a multifaceted approach to his future beyond basketball.
