BRAIN GAINGreece Introduces New Work Visas to Attract Global Talent

Athens, Greece – Greece is rolling out new work visas designed to lure non-EU nationals, aiming to bolster its economy and transform into a hub for academia, research, and investment. Migration and Asylum Minister Dimitris Kairidis unveiled the proposal to the cabinet, outlining plans for the TalentVisa and TechVisa programs.

According to Minister Kairidis, these initiatives are pivotal for fostering controlled immigration and tapping into international talent pools, a strategic focus for the ministry. “Our goal is to welcome skilled professionals and executives from around the world, enriching Greece’s workforce and stimulating economic growth,” he remarked.

The ‘Greek Tech Visa for Outstanding Talent’ is tailored for employees, investors, and startup founders outside the EU. It offers a streamlined pathway to residency permits, facilitating employment within Greece’s burgeoning startup ecosystem. Successful applicants can work, switch employers, or pursue self-employment for a year, with options for extending the permit and including family members.

Similar visa schemes have proven successful in other European nations and the United States, aligning with global trends towards decentralized, high-tech economies.

The Talent Visa, another addition, targets graduates from top international universities. Unlike traditional visas, it doesn’t mandate a prior job offer, enabling recipients to explore employment opportunities upon arrival. Eligibility criteria encompass recent graduates from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Ivy League universities and leading establishments in Asia and Europe.

Proficiency in Greek isn’t obligatory, though applicants must demonstrate English language skills unless exempted due to nationality or academic background. Financial self-sufficiency is also a prerequisite, ensuring individuals can support themselves without reliance on public funds.

Minister Kairidis emphasized the visa’s dual purpose: attracting fresh talent to Greece while offering graduates an immersive experience in the country. “By providing a gateway for global talent, we aim to invigorate our economy and cultivate lasting partnerships,” he explained.

The initiative is poised to invigorate Greece’s labor market, with prospective candidates gaining exposure to the country’s rich culture and European opportunities. “This visa paves the way for meaningful contributions to Greece’s economic landscape,” Minister Kairidis concluded.
