Greece has been rocked by another devastating case of femicide, as the recent murder of a young Polish woman on Kos island has sent shockwaves through the country. Anastazja Rubinska, a 27-year-old Polish citizen who had gone missing on Monday, was tragically discovered dead on Sunday by a volunteer participating in the extensive search efforts.
Reports from AMNA indicate that Rubinska’s body was found unclothed and wrapped in a bedsheet, with the upper part further concealed in a plastic bag. With the conclusion of the search for Rubinska marking a heartbreaking turn of events, Greek authorities are now focused on solving this heinous crime. The prime suspect, who was apprehended on Saturday, has not yet confessed to the murder.
The area where Anastazja was found murdered, under a tree covered in leaves and branches, is approximately one kilometer away from the residence of a 32-year-old Bangladeshi man who was arrested the previous day on suspicion of abduction. On Saturday, Rubinska’s mobile phone was discovered half a kilometer from the suspect’s house, with its SIM card removed.
Greek media has reported the presence of Rubinska’s DNA in the suspect’s house, and police investigators have observed scratches and signs of a struggle on the suspect’s person, which he claims resulted from a recent road traffic accident.
According to the suspect’s statement to the police, he engaged in sexual intercourse with Anastazja at his residence before dropping her off at a location where her partner was supposed to pick her up. Rubinska had arrived on Kos island with her Polish partner to work at a hotel in the Tigaki-Marmari area for the summer season.
Her partner reported her missing on Tuesday, explaining to the police that Anastazja had contacted him on Monday night, informing him that she was intoxicated. She subsequently sent him her exact location so he could retrieve her. However, upon his arrival, he found no one there, and her cellphone was turned off.
The last CCTV footage of Anastazja captured her entering a takeaway restaurant in the vicinity a few hours before her disappearance. Her final sighting occurred at a mini-market, where she appeared to be intoxicated and encountered a group of four Pakistani and Bangladeshi men. She left with one of them, who is now the main suspect, on his motorbike.
An exhaustive search involving the police, firefighters, civil protection teams, local rescue squads, and a sniffer dog persisted until Rubinska’s body was discovered on Sunday afternoon. Her mother had also traveled from Poland with a private detective to assist in the search efforts, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for her grieving family.
