Crete, Greece – Authorities on the picturesque Greek island of Crete have taken decisive action to ensure public safety in the wake of a recent earthquake that triggered a rockslide, resulting in the serious injury of a Spanish tourist. The directive to temporarily close the Samariá Gorge, as well as several other gorges within the White Mountain range, was issued on Monday, in response to the seismic event that shook the region the previous day. The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 4.9, prompted a swift and coordinated response to safeguard the wellbeing of visitors and residents alike.

In the aftermath of the tremor, more than 600 individuals were promptly evacuated from the 16-kilometer (10-mile) Samaria hiking trail, an iconic route renowned for its stunning natural beauty. The consequences of the rockslide were particularly severe for a 45-year-old Spanish hiker, who sustained critical injuries. Following a rapid helicopter transport to a state hospital in the port city of Chania, the hiker underwent a leg amputation procedure. Medical professionals continue to closely monitor his condition.

Officials of the regional government, headquartered in Chania, were scheduled to convene on Monday to deliberate on the potential extension of the closure, particularly considering the forthcoming public holiday on Wednesday.

Notably, the Samaria Gorge, situated within a designated nature reserve, is typically accessible to visitors for a six-month period, commencing in May and concluding in October. The seasonal operation is in line with efforts to strike a balance between promoting sustainable tourism and safeguarding the integrity of the natural environment. During periods of inclement weather, the gorge is closed to ensure visitor safety.
