Athens, Greece – The rollout of Greece’s new digital identity cards is set to commence on Monday, as announced by the Citizen Protection Ministry. A designated platform on gov.gr will be launched on Sunday night or Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, individuals will be able to book appointment slots at police departments.
The issuance of the new identity cards, which will be the size of a credit card, will take place at police stations. Each card will cost 10 euros, payable electronically, and will be valid for a period of 10 years.
Following concerns and reactions regarding the new identity cards, government officials have clarified that the cards will not contain geospatial tracking chips and will not grant access to sensitive personal data.
It’s important to note that the old ID cards will remain valid until August 2026. This transition to digital identity cards represents a significant step in modernizing Greece’s identification system while ensuring data security and accessibility for citizens.
