Navagio Beach, situated on the Greek island of Zakynthos, has earned a spot in the top ten best beaches in the world, as listed by Big 7 Travel. Securing the seventh position, Navagio Beach is renowned for its stunning turquoise waters and picturesque surroundings. Its name, “Navagio,” translates to “shipwreck,” as it was named after a ship that wrecked there in 1983. The beach’s breathtaking beauty has made it one of Greece’s most photographed and sought-after locations, featuring in music videos and attracting visitors from around the globe.
The international list compiled by Big 7 Travel also included other remarkable beaches from diverse destinations like the Philippines, Colombia, St Lucia, Zanzibar, Australia, Seychelles, the Turks and Caicos, and Vietnam. Claiming the top spot was White Beach, Port Barton, in the Philippines.
While Navagio Beach’s recognition is well-deserved, it has faced challenges as well. Earlier in the year, authorities made the decision to keep the beach closed to tourists during the summer due to landslide risks. The Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) experts assessed the site and found significant risks of landslides resulting from the erosion of surrounding cliffs. The safety of residents and visitors was prioritized in making this decision, as Navagio Beach is a popular destination with a high number of tourists during the peak season.
This is not the first time the beach has been closed for safety reasons. In 2018, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake caused rocks to fall into the bay, leading to injuries and subsequent closure. The beach remained off-limits until April 2019, and now it will undergo reassessments twice a year to ensure safety.
Despite these temporary closures, the allure and beauty of Navagio Beach continue to captivate travelers worldwide, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a truly awe-inspiring beach experience in Greece.
