QATARGATEGreek MEP Eva Kaili to Resume Parliament Duties After Being Released from House Arrest

Greek MEP Eva Kaili, who has been at the center of the “Qatargate” corruption scandal, is planning to resume her duties in the European Parliament next week after being released from house arrest pending trial, according to her lawyer. Kaili’s Greek lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, confirmed that she will be present at the European Parliament and intends to raise the issue of whether her surveillance, arrest, and incarceration violated her rights as an MEP.

On Thursday, prosecutors allowed the former newsreader, aged 44, to remove her electronic ankle tag and released her from house arrest pending trial. Kaili, who was once seen as a rising star in the European Parliament, has since been stripped of her former role as vice-president and excluded from her political group. She was initially arrested in Brussels in December as part of a police investigation into alleged corruption within the European Parliament. In April, she was placed under house arrest.

Kaili has vehemently denied all charges against her. While several other European politicians and parliamentary aides were also arrested and charged in connection with the Belgian investigation, all but one have now been released from house arrest.

According to investigators, the alleged mastermind behind the distribution of bribes to promote the interests of Qatar and Morocco is former Belgian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is cooperating with the inquiry. Both governments have denied any involvement. The scandal came to light when police conducted raids in Brussels, seizing at least 1.5 million euros in cash stored in suitcases and bags.

Dimitrakopoulos asserted that Kaili’s fingerprints were not found on the money seized by the police and expressed confidence that she would be acquitted, stating that it remains uncertain whether the case will even go to trial.
