IDENTITY CRISISGreek Minister Slams Critics of New ID Cards as “Absurd” and “Obscurantist”

Athens, Greece – Citizen Protection Minister Giannis Oikonomou has strongly criticized the reactions against the introduction of new identity cards in Greece. He urged individuals who believe their existing IDs will remain valid for 10 years not to waste their time, emphasizing that from 2026 onward, only the new type of ID cards will be recognized.

Oikonomou dismissed conspiracy theories suggesting that the new IDs will contain chips for controlling cardholders’ lives. He described these claims as rooted in “absurdity and obscurantism” and seen as attempts to sow division within Greek society.

Furthermore, Oikonomou firmly rejected accusations of failing to protect the confidentiality of personal data associated with the new ID cards. He stressed that the issuance of these IDs follows a rigorous approval process under the scrutiny of the relevant official auditing body.

The Minister’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to implementing the new ID card system and dispelling misinformation surrounding its features and purpose.
