GREEK CABINET LINEUPGreek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis Unveils New Cabinet Following Election Victory

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced his new cabinet lineup after the resounding victory of his New Democracy party in the recent election. Notable changes include Nikos Dendias moving from the Foreign Ministry to the Defense Ministry, with Giorgos Gerapetritis taking over as the new Foreign Minister. Gerapetritis, a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Athens, previously served as a state minister and later as the Minister of Transport. Kostis Hatzidakis, the former Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, assumes the position of Minister of Finance, while Christos Staikouras, the former Finance Minister, now heads the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the former Minister of Digital Governance, known for upgrading Greece’s digital services, is appointed as the Minister of Education, with Dimitris Papastergiou, the mayor of Trikala, taking over his previous role. Niki Kerameus, the former Minister of Education, transitions to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Kostas Skrekas becomes the Minister of Development, and Lina Mendoni retains her position as the Culture Minister. Giorgos Florides, a former PASOK minister, assumes the role of Minister of Justice, and Pavlos Marinakis becomes the new Government Spokesman.

The new cabinet will convene for its first meeting on Wednesday, and the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday at the Presidential Mansion. Mitsotakis who was sworn in as the Prime Minister on Monday, expressed his honor and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with forming a single-party government. He pledged to initiate major reforms and emphasized that the government would be dedicated to hard work and practical results, leveraging its strong mandate and parliamentary majority.

Mitsotakis aims to implement significant changes during his four-year term, including increased investment in the public health system to address the strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, he intends to improve railway safety following the devastating train collision in February, which claimed the lives of 57 people, making it Greece’s worst rail disaster.

The prime minister expressed his determination to bring about transformative changes and set ambitious goals for the country’s future. Mitsotakis’s historic victory, with the widest margin of victory from the main opposition in modern Greek political history, further reinforces his mandate to pursue rapid and impactful reforms.
