Turmoil has erupted within the main opposition party SYRIZA as a survey circulated, seeking party members’ opinions on the party’s identity, leading to an emergency meeting of the political secretariat. The party’s leader, Stefanos Kasselakis, distributed the questionnaire on the party’s online platform, “isyriza,” prompting strong reactions from party officials who expressed uncertainty about the purpose of the upcoming Party Congress scheduled for Thursday.
In an attempt to address the internal confusion, the political secretariat called for an emergency meeting on Monday, currently ongoing. Kasselakis, absent from the meeting, had distributed a letter emphasizing that the questionnaire’s results would not be disclosed. He urged political secretariat members to refrain from spreading conspiracy theories about the Party Congress.
The leaked letter from Kasselakis further fueled speculations about the internal dynamics of the party, raising questions about the motives behind the identity survey. Despite his absence, the political secretariat meeting proceeded to discuss the unfolding situation within SYRIZA.
Kasselakis, currently in London for a conference on the modern left at the London School of Economics, faces a party grappling with internal divisions and a quest for clarity regarding its identity, logo, and name. The survey results and the upcoming Party Congress are anticipated to shed light on the future direction of SYRIZA, which has been a prominent political force in Greek politics.
