Evros, Greece – Firefighting crews are locked in a relentless struggle to contain the raging inferno in Evros, northeastern Greece, which has now entered its 14th consecutive day of fierce firefighting efforts as of Friday. During the night, a pivotal battle unfolded as crews worked tirelessly to prevent the encroaching flames from engulfing the town of Soufli.
The Fire Service has reported that the fire currently rages in the area between Giannouli and Kornofolias. Encouragingly, Soufli and Protoklissi appear to be temporarily spared from the immediate threat posed by the flames.
Thursday night witnessed a moment of heightened concern as civil protection authorities issued a warning to residents of Soufli via the emergency number 112. This alert was prompted by the fire’s ominous proximity to the town.
As of Friday, the firefighting mobilization involves an impressive fleet of 129 fire engines staffed by 586 dedicated firefighters. Six firefighting aircraft and two helicopters are providing crucial air support to the ground teams.
Concurrently, firefighting units continue their operations in Parnitha, situated in western Attica. The primary focus is on areas near the Fortress of Fyli. Furthermore, the fire in Tsikraki, located in Farsala, central Greece, has been successfully contained, marking a significant achievement. The situation with the fire in Korona, Kilkis, in northern Greece, has also witnessed improvements.
Positive strides have been made in gaining partial control over fires in the Peloponnese region. Specifically, progress has been reported in Aspropoulia, Messinia, and Geraki, Ilia.
Thursday alone saw the emergence of 32 new forest fires across the country. Firefighting forces remained actively engaged in combatting a total of 68 fires, underscoring the immense challenges faced by these dedicated teams as they battle to bring these blazes under control.
