Athens, Greece – A 42-year-old Russian citizen who was arrested in January for sending threatening emails, including threats to plant bombs at the Eleftherios Venizelos airport and six hospitals in Attica, has been sentenced to prison in absentia.
The Three-Member Magistrates’ Court of Thessaloniki found the defendant guilty of multiple offenses, including serious disruption of the orderly operation of a service, spreading false news, attempting to obstruct transportation, and threatening to commit an act of terrorism, all classified as misdemeanor crimes. The man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison, with a three-year suspension.
Despite the legal proceedings, the defendant did not appear in court and was not represented by an attorney. During the initial investigation, he denied being the sender of the threatening messages and instead identified himself as a “blogger,” attributing the incident to rivalries with other “YouTubers.”
In the messages, the individual had threatened to detonate explosives and identified himself as an imam of the Taliban, stating, “I am a Tatar Muslim, and I am ready to shed my blood for Islam.”
