TAXI STRIKESTaxi Drivers Announce Strikes in Athens and Thessaloniki Over Tax Evasion Measures

Athens, Greece – Athens and Thessaloniki are set to face disruptions as taxi drivers in both cities gear up for strikes in response to government actions targeting tax evasion within the self-employed sector. The unions representing these drivers have announced strikes on December 5-6 in Athens and December 4-8 in Thessaloniki.

Expressing their vehement opposition to the government’s measures, the unions highlighted their concerns about the imminent impact on their industry.

“The new tax bill exacerbates the already dire situation our industry faces,” remarked the Thessaloniki cabbies’ union. Their statement condemned the proposed tax legislation, claiming it directly threatens individual entrepreneurship. “It represents a direct assault on human dignity and the fundamental values expected in a democratic nation,” added the Athens cab union, echoing similar sentiments.

The taxi drivers’ unions have mobilized in response to what they perceive as an existential threat to their profession. They argue that the proposed tax measures not only burden an already struggling industry but also undermine the core principles of a democratic society, causing severe economic distress for individuals reliant on this line of work.

With significant disruptions anticipated in two of Greece’s major cities, the strikes underscore the depth of discontentment among taxi drivers and their determination to challenge legislation they believe pose a threat their economic welfare.
