NO MORE WAITINGThessaloniki Metro Set to Open in Fall after Nearly Two Decades of Anticipation

Thessaloniki, Greece – After nearly two decades of anticipation, Thessaloniki is poised to welcome the inauguration of its inaugural metro line by the end of November. The forthcoming metro system which began construction in 2006 with an estimated budget of €2.26 billion, promises to revolutionize transportation in the northern port city, catering to an estimated 15% of its commuting populace, according to Apostolos Papagiannakis, an associate professor specializing in network and transport planning at Aristotle University.

“In order to perform its role effectively, extensions will have to be implemented, alongside the creation of a parking-transfer system to incentivize car users,” Papagiannakis remarked. However, he noted with regret, “Unfortunately, these stations have not been built.”

Transport expert Alexandros Tsavdaroglou emphasized the need for supplementary measures to maximize the metro’s impact. Tsavdaroglou stressed, “Complementary measures are essential, such as expanding bicycle paths, enhancing sea transport options, and implementing disincentives for cars in the city center.”

The prolonged wait for the metro’s arrival has left many Thessalonians eagerly anticipating its benefits. With overcrowded buses and pedestrians navigating congested streets, the metro offers a promising alternative for commuters.

The delayed launch has prompted discussions on the necessity of integrated transportation solutions. As Tsavdaroglou asserts, “The full potential of the metro can only be realized through coordinated efforts that prioritize sustainability and accessibility.”

Despite the lingering challenges, the imminent opening of the Thessaloniki metro marks a significant milestone in the city’s transportation landscape. As the countdown to November draws closer, residents anticipate a transformative shift in their daily commute, with the metro poised to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity across the urban expanse.

With the launch date fast approaching, stakeholders are hopeful that the metro will fulfill its promise of delivering efficient and sustainable transportation solutions for Thessaloniki’s burgeoning population.
