NEO-PATRAGreek University Opens Branch in Egypt

Patras, Greece – In a groundbreaking move, the Greek University of Patras has announced the opening of a branch in Alexandria, Egypt, marking the first time a Greek higher education institution has taken this step.

The official signing of a memorandum for the establishment of this branch took place on Friday at the offices of the Greek community of Alexandria. The signatories of this historic memorandum were Christos Bouras, the rector of the University of Patras, and Andreas Vafiadis, the president of the Greek community of Alexandria. This collaboration is seen as a significant development for both institutions.

The University of Patras branch in Alexandria will encompass two departments, offering courses in Greek culture, Greek language, and Greek philosophy in both the Greek and English languages. Each program is expected to admit approximately 100 students, and while tuition fees will be applicable, the exact amounts have not yet been determined.

Faculty members at the branch will include professors from the University of Patras and external collaborators for one semester. It is anticipated that the branch will become fully operational by 2025.

Rector Christos Bouras emphasized that the decision to establish a branch in Alexandria is not only a milestone for the University of Patras but also demonstrates a commitment to strengthening Greek presence in Egypt and Africa. This endeavor aligns with broader efforts by the Greek government and the Patriarchate of Alexandria to foster a robust Greek presence in the region.

The historical significance of Alexandria, dating back over two millennia, is marked by iconic landmarks such as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Great Library, and its Necropolis. Alexandria, once the second-most powerful city in the ancient Mediterranean region after Rome, has a storied history deeply intertwined with Hellenism.

In modern times, Greek immigration to Alexandria has had several waves, notably in the 18th and 19th centuries and following the Greek revolution of 1821. Today, the Greek community in Alexandria consists of approximately 1,000 members, continuing the legacy of Hellenism in the region.

This pioneering initiative by the University of Patras promises to further cultural exchange and cooperation between Greece and Egypt, forging new academic frontiers in the process.
