OceanGate has confirmed the unfortunate demise of the five crew members aboard the missing Titanic submersible. Stockton Rush, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son Suleman have all tragically passed away due to a catastrophic implosion of the sub. OceanGate, the owner of the sub, described the crew as “true explorers” with an indomitable spirit of adventure.
In a statement released, OceanGate expressed their deep sorrow: “We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost. These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts go out to these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We mourn the loss of life and the joy they brought to everyone they knew.”
Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard, leading the search for the Titan, confirmed that the investigation was ongoing. The debris of the sub was discovered more than 650 feet away from the bow of the Titanic wreck. Carl Hartsville from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution described the area where the debris was found as having a smooth bottom, consistent with the last communication indicating an implosion in the water column.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed his condolences and described the news as tragic. The government is providing close support to the affected families. Debris found, including a landing frame, rear cover, and fishtail fairing, offers vital clues to the fate of the sub. However, the hull, containing the crew, has yet to be located. The OceanGate sub vanished on Sunday less than 2-hours during its descent to the Titanic wreckage and has remained unseen until discovery of debris today.
