Celtic secured the Scottish Cup and completed a fifth domestic treble in seven seasons with a victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Inverness put up a strong defensive performance, but Kyogo Furuhashi broke the deadlock with his 34th goal of the season just before halftime. Liel Abada extended Celtic’s lead with a well-executed finish, seemingly sealing the victory. However, Inverness pulled one back through Daniel MacKay’s header, injecting some late drama into the match. Nevertheless, Celtic held on, and in stoppage time, Jota converted Abada’s cross to secure the win and claim their 41st Scottish Cup.
Manager Ange Postecoglou, who joined Celtic in 2021, has now won five out of the six domestic trophies available. While there are speculations linking him to the Tottenham job, he has fulfilled his objective of restoring Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football. Despite not delivering a vintage performance, Celtic demonstrated their resilience and achieved their goal.
“I’m very proud. It’s been an extraordinary season by the boys. We caught people by surprise last year. It’s always hard defending things. The challenge was, ‘can we be better this year and we push on?’ expressed Postecoglou.
“We’ve won the trophy that eluded us last year, so it feels great, it’s the last day of the season. It’s an occasion and it was nice to finish it off that way” he added.
Inverness, who finished sixth in the Championship and had a long break before the final, put up a disciplined display under the guidance of manager Billy Dodds. Although they posed little threat, they remained resilient and were rewarded with MacKay’s late goal. Despite falling short, Inverness can take pride in their efforts.
The Celtic fans celebrated their team’s victory, showing their appreciation for Postecoglou’s impact on the club. The Australian manager, who transformed Celtic’s fortunes, has won the hearts of the supporters. As the fans sang in tribute to Postecoglou, he embraced the moment before lifting the trophy.
Regardless of Postecoglou’s future, his time at Celtic will be remembered fondly. Inverness can also reflect on their commendable performance, giving their all despite the unfavorable circumstances leading up to the final.
