THE REPLACEMENTAnthony Joshua to Face Robert Helenius at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday after Fight with Dillian Whyte Axed

Anthony Joshua is set to face Robert Helenius at London’s O2 Arena this Saturday, stepping in as a replacement for Dillian Whyte after the latter’s recent failed drug test led to the cancellation of their heavyweight rematch.

Helenius, hailing from Finland with a record of 32 wins and four losses, has taken on the challenge with less than a week’s notice. The unexpected switch prompted Joshua to remark, “This wasn’t in the script,” while affirming his unwavering focus on securing a victory.

Helenius, a 39-year-old known for his resilience, expressed his readiness to confront any challenge at a moment’s notice. His most recent significant bout ended in a first-round knockout defeat by Deontay Wilder in October.

“I am a true Viking that is willing to face any challenge at a moment’s notice,” Helenius said.

“This is not an opportunity I was going to let slip away. I plan to make the most of it,” he added.

Though Helenius has never contended for a world title, his determination remains resolute. His most recent outing resulted in a third-round TKO win over Mika Mielonen in Finland, demonstrating his prowess.

Standing at 6ft 6in, Helenius has previously faced setbacks against opponents like Gerald Washington, Whyte, and Johann Duhaupas. A triumph against Helenius would potentially pave the way for Joshua’s highly anticipated clash with former WBC champion Deontay Wilder, potentially scheduled for early next year.

Joshua’s undefeated record at the O2 Arena underscores his prowess, as evidenced by his victory in April against Jermaine Franklin. The road to finding a suitable replacement was not without challenges, as numerous heavyweights from Joshua’s undercard were considered. Eddie Hearn, the promoter, revealed that many contenders priced themselves out of contention.

In the face of the fight’s cancellation due to Whyte’s failed drug test, Joshua’s response was notably composed, according to Hearn. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) relayed the news to Matchroom promoters and boxing authorities.

“With a week to go before one of the biggest fights of the year I was shocked and dumfounded. AJ sent me a message which was unbelievably calm,” said Hearn.

“AJ is desperate to fight. He has looked unbelievable in camp. I have never seen him in such good shape.”
