Emma Raducanu, the 20-year-old British tennis star, has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon, the French Open, and the US Open, after undergoing three “minor procedures” to address ongoing physical issues.
Raducanu is having surgery on both hands and an ankle, and is not expected to return to the court until after the US Open in mid-September. As a result, she will miss her home Grand Slam at the All England Club, and there is no chance of her playing at Roland Garros.
Raducanu announced the news to her 2.5 million Instagram followers, explaining that she has been dealing with a recurring injury on a bone in both hands for the last 10 months. She underwent surgery on her right hand, the most problematic of the issues, on June 8, and is set to have surgery on her left hand later this month. She will also have an operation on her left ankle in the coming weeks. While her team hopes she will be back on the tennis court by the end of the summer, they have not predicted an exact return date to competition.
“I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try (to) heal it. Unfortunately, it’s not enough.
“I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues.
“I’m disappointed to share that I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.
“It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts.
“Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.”
Raducanu has struggled with form and fitness since her historic win at the US Open in September 2021. She dropped out of the world’s top 100 in the rankings last month, winning only five of her ten matches this year. Despite this, she earned £20 million in sponsorships from companies including Tiffany & Co, Dior, Porsche, and British Airways in 2022.
