Washington DC – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US Senator Chris Coons had a lighthearted moment during their meeting in Washington DC on Thursday, joking about their striking resemblance. Sharing a selfie together, Sen. Coons quipped in German, “Wer ist wer?” (“Who is who?”), highlighting their uncanny similarity in appearance.
Despite their nearly identical greying hair and middle-aged baldness, the two leaders also share a passion for politics and a sense of urgency regarding the situation in Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz, known more for his serious demeanor, joined in the fun, referring to Sen. Coons as his “Doppelganger” in a social media post.

Their meeting wasn’t just for laughs, though. Chancellor Scholz arrived in Washington DC to discuss support for Ukraine with President Joe Biden and emphasized the importance of providing additional aid. Meeting with Sen. Coons and other lawmakers, he reiterated the need for swift action in the face of Russian aggression.
As Congress grapples with how to pass additional aid for Ukraine and Israel amid political divisions, Chancellor Scholz stressed the importance of unity. In an op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal, he emphasized the global significance of standing together against Russian aggression and urged citizens on both sides of the Atlantic to unite in support of a safer world.
