CASINO ROYALEIntegrated Resort with Europe’s Largest Casino Opens in Cyprus

The grand opening of the largest casino and integrated resort in Europe took place in Cyprus earlier this week, with a lavish gala attended by President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus.

The visionary behind the City of Dreams Mediterranean (CoDM) is Lawrence Ho, CEO of Hong Kong-based gambling firm Melco. Ho was inspired to build the resort after falling in love with the island during a visit for a wedding 16 years ago.

Located in the coastal city of Limassol, the complex was constructed over three years at a cost exceeding €637 million ($700 million) and currently employs 2,000 staff. President Christodoulides lauded the resort as “a one-of-a-kind integrated casino resort that stands as a testament to our commitment for progress and excellence, being – at the same time – a catalyst for economic growth, job creation and the attraction of visitors from all over the world.”

“It is an emblematic project that is expected to redefine the landscape of our tourism industry, showcasing the ability to transform visions into reality,” the President added.

Ho also spoke passionately about his connection to Cyprus, stating that the “City of Dreams Mediterranean gives Cyprus a new story to tell. People who overlooked this island in the past, now have a fresh list of compelling reasons to visit. This resort will attract new premium tourists, year round, reflecting in the economy, and the traditionally seasonal jobs market.”

Encompassing over 14.8 acres, the CoDM offers a plethora of amenities. The centerpiece is the 80,000-square-foot casino, boasting an extensive selection of slot machines (around 750) and table games (75), catering to both casual players and seasoned gamblers.

Beyond the casino, guests can indulge in a diverse range of dining experiences, from upscale restaurants serving gourmet cuisine to trendy cafes offering tantalizing snacks and beverages. Luxury retail outlets are also present, providing shoppers with access to high-end fashion and exclusive brands.

Sustainability is a key focus for the CoDM, with the implementation of eco-friendly initiatives such as energy-efficient systems, waste management programs, and green building practices. Melco aims to minimize the resort’s environmental impact while delivering a luxurious experience for guests. Grant Johnson, the property manager, highlighted the installation of a solar power system generating 1.2 MW of renewable energy on the sun-drenched island.

“This resort is the largest of its kind in Europe,” Johnson stated, underscoring the magnitude and significance of the project.
