Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has decided to withdraw his offer to purchase Manchester United, a source with knowledge of the process revealed on Saturday. Sheikh Jassim was one of the prominent contenders in the bid to take over the Premier League club, but almost a year since bids were invited for the club, he has informed the Glazer family, the current owners, of his decision to withdraw his offer.
While British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s offer remains in place, there have been reports suggesting he is willing to accept a minority stake. Sheikh Jassim’s decision comes at a time when Manchester United fans have expressed growing frustration with the prolonged sale process. Fan protests outside Old Trafford and chants of “Glazers out” have become common during games.
“MUFC is in desperate need of new investment and new majority ownership. We hope this news accelerates that process rather than delays it,” said the Manchester United Supporters Trust. The Glazer family announced plans to seek new investment in November and appointed Raine to oversee the process, potentially including a full sale. However, there has been no indication of a deal nearing completion.
Sheikh Jassim had proposed taking 100% ownership of United, promising to clear its debt and invest in the stadium, training center, and playing squads. His withdrawal leaves Ratcliffe in a favorable position, although the extent of his stake in the club remains uncertain. Born in Greater Manchester, Ratcliffe has long been a United fan, but a deal that allows the Glazers to retain a majority ownership is not likely to be well-received by fans who seek a full sale.
United is currently 10th in the Premier League, and the ownership situation continues to be a source of concern for supporters.
