PREMIER POSTETottenham Appoint Ange Postecoglou as New Manager

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, signing him on a four-year contract. The 57-year-old Greek-Australian manager departs from Celtic after securing consecutive Scottish Premiership titles during his two-year tenure. Postecoglou becomes Spurs’ fourth permanent manager since Mauricio Pochettino led them to the Champions League final in 2018-19, following the reigns of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy expressed his enthusiasm about the appointment, stating “Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play. He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our club.”

Postecoglou, the first Australian to manage in the Premier League, arrives at Spurs after achieving a domestic treble in Scotland and winning five out of six trophies available to Celtic in his two seasons.

Celtic’s chief executive, Michael Nicholson, commended “It has been a pleasure working with Ange, a great football manager and a good man. He has served the club with such energy and determination and delivered a phenomenal level of success.”

“Of course, we wanted Ange to stay at Celtic and while there is real disappointment we are losing him, he has decided he wants to look at a new challenge, which we respect” he added.

Tottenham had been searching for a new manager since Conte’s departure in March, with Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason taking temporary charge.

Postecoglou faces the task of revitalizing Tottenham’s performance, as they have only achieved one top-four finish in the four seasons since their appearance in the 2019 Champions League final. Similar to his arrival at Celtic, he joins Tottenham during a period of transition, with the club seeking a new sporting director following Fabio Paratici’s departure. Additionally, the uncertainty surrounding striker Harry Kane’s future and the potential interest from Real Madrid will require attention as Postecoglou looks to shape a squad capable of returning to the Champions League.

Postecoglou’s coaching philosophy traces back to his playing days in Australia, particularly under the guidance of Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas at South Melbourne. He began his managerial career in 1996 with South Melbourne, winning consecutive A-League titles with Brisbane Roar from 2009 to 2012. He then went on to manage the Australian national team, leading them to the 2014 World Cup and a victory in the 2015 Asian Cup. In Japan, he brought success to Yokohama F Marinos, securing their first J-League title in 15 years in 2019.

Postecoglou’s appointment brings a mix of optimism and anticipation to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the club aims to regain their status among the top teams in English football.
