Tennis newest couple Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas, have withdrawn from the Wimbledon mixed doubles competition. The decision came after Spanish tennis star Badosa retired from her second-round singles match against Marta Kostyuk due to a spinal stress fracture that resurfaced.
Badosa, who has been grappling with injuries throughout the season, revealed in a press conference that her spinal stress fracture had worsened. Despite her efforts to compete, she acknowledged the need for rest and consultation with her team regarding her recovery. As a result, the Greek-Spanish tennis couple decided to withdraw from the mixed doubles competition.
“I tried my best to try to play here, but yesterday when I woke up I already, after my first-round match, felt it again. It’s a little bit worse,” said the No. 29 seed.
“So I will need a few days off and talk to my team and see what I do in the next days and the next weeks,” Badosa added.
Shortly after the withdrawal, Tsitsipas returned to the court to participate in the men’s doubles event alongside his brother, Petros Tsitsipas.
In place of Badosa and Tsitsipas, Anna Danilina and Nicolas Mahut were chosen as alternates to face the top-seeded duo of Jessica Pegula and Austin Krajicek.
The unfortunate turn of events means that fans will have to wait for the opportunity to witness Tsitsipas and Badosa playing together in a match. Their union on the tennis court will have to be put on hold for at least one more Grand Slam event.
