Greece continues to shine on the global tourism stage, securing the title of the Best Tourist Destination in the World for 2024 at the prestigious Grand Travel Awards (GTA) in Sweden. The award ceremony, held in Stockholm last Thursday, recognized Greece alongside Italy, as both countries shared the top position in this esteemed category.
Nikos Karalekas, the deputy head of the Greek Embassy in Stockholm, and Maria Zevgoula, the deputy head of the Greek National Tourism Organization service in Scandinavia, proudly accepted the award on behalf of Greece. This remarkable achievement marks the first time in three decades that Greece has clinched this particular honor at the GTA in Sweden.
The Grand Travel Awards, organized by the professional website Travel News, have been a benchmark in the Swedish tourism industry for 32 years. The winners across various categories are determined through a comprehensive survey involving approximately 400 travel agency executives, who evaluate their top suppliers. Additionally, a representative sample of 4,000 Swedish tourists, each having undertaken at least one trip with an overnight stay in 2023, contributes to the selection process.
Greece’s recognition as the Best Tourist Destination underscores the country’s enduring appeal and the positive experiences it offers to visitors. In 2023, 544,097 Swedes explored the wonders of Greece, with particular appreciation for the rich Greek cuisine and the overall sense of security they experienced during their stay.
This accolade adds to Greece’s recent triumphs in the Nordic market, following earlier awards in Norway in January. As the tourism industry continues to recover globally, Greece’s allure remains undiminished.
