GREEK FOOTBALLContract for Construction of 123 Million Euros Panathinaikos Stadium Finalized

Exciting news emerges as the Municipality of Athens and a consortium of companies have finalized a contract, paving the way for the construction of a new football stadium for Panathinaikos sports club in the Votanikos suburb of Athens. The contract was signed by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, representatives from TERNA SA, AKTOR, and Metka, and witnessed by Development & Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis and Panathinaikos President Giannis Alafouzos. This milestone event was hailed as a “historic day” for both the team and the city.

The anticipated stadium will have views of the Acropolis

The construction of the eagerly anticipated stadium, featuring views of the Acropolis, will commence immediately following the completion of the necessary studies. It is projected that the stadium will be ready for use by 2026. The budget for the project, amounting to 123 million euros, will be financed through a combination of national, European, and private resources.

The football stadium will boast a seating capacity of 38,500 and will also incorporate an arena with 1,300 seats and suites, 325 underground parking spaces, and seven shops. This development forms part of a larger urban regeneration project for the Votanikos area, which includes a 12,500-seat basketball arena, a volleyball stadium accommodating 1,500 spectators, an Olympic-size swimming pool, municipal sports, cultural and recreational facilities, as well as green spaces.

The subsequent phase of the project will focus on the creation of a park, a sports museum, a café, and an underground parking area along Alexandras Avenue in Ambelokipi, central Athens, where the former Panathinaikos stadium known as “Leoforos” was originally constructed in 1922. The comprehensive undertaking aims to revitalize the area and provide state-of-the-art facilities for sports enthusiasts and the local community.
